World December 2020: Sales up 2.3% thanks to China, USA and Japan



 LMC Automotive released the Global Light Vehicle Sales Update for December, showing an encouraging 2.3% increase to 8,334,079 units over the previous year. The Full Year 2020 fell to 77,660,800 units, down -14%, with 12.6 million losses compared with 2019's 90,285,994. In terms of annual sales rate (SAAR), December is in line with the last four months. With 91.3 million units, it is above the FY2019 result, which shows that the global light vehicle market has returned to pre-pandemic levels despite record high infection rates worldwide.



Looking at sales by region, there are three main engines of growth this month. Estimated at + 5.8% to 2.82 million units for a sales ratio of 28 million units, China is at a peak of 30.8 million, but still well above 25.5 million in the 2019 fiscal year. According to US LMC Automotive figures, it reached 1.6 million units, an increase of 6.4%, and the sales rate increased to 16.4 million units, below the 17 million units in 2019. Japan with a sales rate of 5.2m finally increased by 10.6% to 375,602, above the 2019 figure of 5.1m. Western Europe (-3.7%) while helping fast green car sales, Eastern Europe (+ 0.7%) rose by Turkey.
